Sewing bed linen

Therefore, during sleep, you need to use bed linen only from natural linen, cotton and silk fabrics.

But with the rise in prices, bed linen also becomes more expensive, and it is so noticeable that it is time to think about how to sew it yourself.

Of course, a baby crib kit will have to be bought in a store so that it is free of synthetic additives and with quality certificates. But on us - adults, you can save money, sew bed linen with your own hands, the main thing is to choose the right material and correctly calculate its consumption.

Which fabric should I choose?

Some bedding manufacturers can offer inexpensive fabrics. But unfortunately, the best materials for bed linen - chintz or coarse calico cannot be bought inexpensively, and moreover, it is generally impossible for the fabric to contain 100% cotton fiber.

Judge for yourself, if the cost of one meter of calico or chintz is equal to the cost of one kilogram of cotton, and it costs more than 100 rubles per kilogram, then the price for these natural fabrics cannot be low.

You can find cheap fabric only of low quality, with a reduced density or with a considerable addition of synthetic fibers, that is, polycotton.

Such fabrics have a slightly shiny and smooth surface, and they are not very durable and do not have the peculiarity of shrinking after washing. But only cotton fibers can create real comfort and coziness during sleep.

Although, it would probably be much better to buy a polycotton and sew a bedding set out of it than to buy it cheap in every sense. The question is why? To understand this, you must first figure out what is the density of calico or calico.

The density of calico or chintz is the amount of cotton used to produce a meter of fabric.

Any factory in its assortment has fabrics of different densities, which are used for sewing bed linen and wear out for more than one year, the main thing is not to fall for an obvious fake, similar in its properties to gauze with short-lived paints.

The label of the coarse calico roll must necessarily have a tag with the specified fabric density. For example, the Shuiskaya coarse calico has a density from 128 to 142 grams / meter. Such fabric is strong, durable andhigh-quality, bed linen made of it serves for many years without shedding or shrinking after washing.

However, our other domestic producers of calico and calico can be trusted, they deserve fair praise.

But it should be borne in mind that counterfeits are also possible, so you need to pay special attention to the label, with the details of the enterprise and the quality characteristics of fabrics, as well as the existing corporate logo and certification mark of the factory's products.

How much fabric do you need for a bedding set?

Sewing bed linen, first of all, includes measuring the necessary parts of the set, such as pillows, mattress, blanket. But to make it easier for yourself, you can simply take measurements from your old kit, adding allowances for shrinkage, seams and inaccuracy of cut (about 7 cm) to them.

Sewing bed linen

The curl of the pillowcase is about 25 centimeters. It is possible and smaller, but if you do not want your pillow to look out of the pillowcase in the morning, it is better to sew it just that size.

The sheet never needs to be cut back to back . It is better to add another 20 centimeters in width from its previous width, and it is not necessary to cut the length, the extra part can always be refilled.

The duvet cover is also cut wider than the previous one by 7 centimeters. You can always remove unnecessary things, but you can't add them. Moreover, during the first wash, any fabric made from natural fibers shrinks. Only after washing you can see what sizes you need to adhere to.

And only after that, you can correctly calculate the required material consumption for sewing. The diagram shows the best fit for a standard 2-bed set: three pillowcases, a sheet and a duvet cover.

It is better to buy a fabric for sewing a bed set with a width of 220 cm, this option is the most optimal.

Firstly, because you will not need to make butt seams to increase the width of the duvet cover or sheet. And secondly, this fabric width will cost less.

Before you start sewing bedding, you need to take care that the sewing is completely waste-free. To do this, you need to buy a width of coarse calico more than 220 cm by 25 and then cut out three pillowcases instead of two, without scraps.

And if the fabric is bought for a set of two pillowcases, then you just need to unfold them across the diagram. The result is a 45 x 155 cm lunge, which makes a baby pillowcase.

The diagram shows everything quite clearly and does not require any comments.

It turns out four pillowcases measuring 50 by 70 cm, so it is more profitable to cut out two sets at once, adding a blanket cover and a sheet to this calculation.

For any sleeping place, it is better to make a width of more than two meters, even if the sofa or bed is less wide.

Pillowcases that are cut along the pattern can always be unfolded so that they are in harmony with the overall pattern of the sheet and duvet cover, but sometimes thisI disharmony only decorates the bed linen.

How to sew bed linen at home

When sewing bed linen at home, the seams are processed with an overlock, if there is one, of course, but not in a zigzag pattern. You can also sew with a special linen stitch that does not fray during washing.

Sewing bed linen

It's a little rougher than overlock, because the double fabric is folded two more times, resulting in a seam consisting of six layers of fabric. On a pillowcase, such seams made of thick coarse calico will be noticeable.

In addition, such processing of bed linen is a very time consuming process that requires a certain technique. An experienced seamstress sews without sweeping, with an even single seam, strictly along the edge.

The choice of thread also matters when sewing. They should be strong, but not too thick, so that they will not fall apart from moisture and washing.

On a sewing machine, the stitch pitch is set to medium size, because the small one is unable to make a strong seam, but on the contrary, by frequent piercing of the needle, it can destroy the fibers of the fabric.

Reasons why it is profitable to sew underwear:

  • The sizes of ready-made linen very rarely coincide with the sizes of existing bedding, and sometimes it is extremely difficult to find a ready-made set for a custom bed (pillow, blanket);
  • The completeness of bed linen can be any, at your discretion;
  • Properly selected fabric will allow and help to adhere to a certain style;
  • Technological methods facilitate sewing and the upcoming use of sewn bedding.
  • Designer search is such an enjoyable and exciting experience that it can be the main reason for making your own.

How pleasant it is to spread beautiful, and most importantly, high-quality bed linen, made by yourself, ignite sincere delight and interest, hear the question - Where can you buy such beauty ? Enjoy your sewing and sweet dreams!
